Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science was founded in April 1989, as one of three new graduate departments. Research and education in computer science and engineering at Keio University, however, dates back to early 1960's when we built our first hand-made electronic computer, K1. Since then, research and education in computer science and engineering has been continuously and actively pursued in the Departments of Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Administration Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, and the Institute of Information Science. We have especially demonstrated our strengths in Computer Architectures and Software Systems.
The department was established to further boost such activities as getting faculty members from various departments together and adding new faculty members. The scope of our department ranges from hardware to software, and from theory to practice. Our first goal is to conduct first-rate research in terms of originality, essentiality, and applicability. The second is, through such research and updated advanced courses, to produce researchers and engineers with Ph.D and Master's degrees who will contribute to the future of computer science technology.

Doctoral Program

The Doctoral Program at Keio is five year program. Student must complete 30 credits of course work. Work done to fulfill the requirements for a Master's degree may be applied toward completion of the Doctoral Program. In addition to required course work, the student must submit a dissertation to be examined and approved by a committee. Those who demonstrate outstanding achievements may complete the Doctoral degree in a shorter period of time, minimum three years.

Master's Program

The required term for a Master's Program studies is two years. For the Master's degree, the student must complete 30 credits and submit a thesis. Those who demonstrate outstanding achievements may complete the Master's degree in a shorter period of time, minimum one year.
